Marine Scout Snipers

This is my Passion in life and what i want to do when i get out of high school. So i decided to make a website about the U.S. military in general and add to it when i can, But the Marine snipers are my favorite and has always been a favorite of mine. Marine Scout Snipers are an elite group of Marines who has had additional training to become a more silent, accurate, and deadly soldier. Their MOS is 0317, it use to be 8541. To become a Sniper you need to pass boot camp and be either an infantrymen or reconnaissance Marine to enter Scout Sniper Training.

Requirements

There is tons of training and practice you have to go through before trying to start or even get accepted into Marine Scout Sniper training. The pre-sniper training and schooling are very difficult and struggling both mental and physical strength. Once are accepted in to Scout Sniper school, you will know basic knowledge about scouting and sniper training as well as advanced knowledge of an infantry marine. You must already have all authorized gear when you show up to scout-sniper training as well your Ghillie suit.

Training-

The new course is now 1212 weeks long. With elimination of the advanced course, Scout Sniper Basic Course was re-designated as the “Scout Sniper Course”. There are 9 straight weeks of shooting qualifications, before the majority of field training.

To become a Sniper you need to pass boot camp and be either an infantrymen or reconnaissance Marine to enter Scout Sniper Training. Since it is a secondary MOS.
Scout Snipers must earn the rank of Lance Corporal, be selected by their battalion or volunteer to join the scout-sniper platoon, and complete an approved scout-sniper course in order to receive this designation.

There are three stages to training

  1. Marksmanship and Basic Fields Craft Phase
  2. Unknown Distance and Stalking
  3. Advanced Field Skills and Mission Employment

History-

In 1944, the War Department Basic Field Manual FM 21-75, Infantry Scouting, Patrolling and Sniping defined the sniper as “…an expert rifleman, well qualified in scouting, whose duty is to pick off key enemy personnel who expose themselves. By eliminating enemy leaders and harassing the troops, sniping softens the enemy’s resistance and weakens his morale.” That definition remains consistent through the broader history of sniping, before and since, whether the weapon was a crossbow or a high-powered, telescopically sighted rifle.

It was the wildly disproportionate contribution of snipers in the Vietnam War that set the stage for the first permanent peacetime sniper training programs. The U.S. Marine Corps set theirs up first at Quantico, Va in 1977.

Another critically important achievement of the USMC Scout Sniper Sniper Schools was the creation of the U.S. military’s first purpose-built sniper rifles. Again, the USMC led the way with the M40A1 Sniper rifle(http://americanshootingjournal.com/history-sniper/ )
